Can Allergies Cause Asthma In Children?

Dec 12th, 2007 by admin

Kids with certain types of allergies are more likely to have asthma, especially if it involves the nose and eyes such as a runny nose or red, itchy eyes. Whatever seems to cause the allergic reaction, whether dust or pollen, can also trigger asthma symptoms. That is not to say that every child that has allergies will get asthma nor that all asthma happens because of allergies.

In the United States alone, 3 out of 4 children diagnosed with asthma is due to allergens, which is an allergy to something. Specifically in these kids the symptoms of wheezing. coughing or trouble breathing are often brought on by allergens.

Allergies involve the immune system since it protects the body by fighting bacteria and germs to help us stay healthy. But in a child with allergies, the immune system treats the allergens as a bad germ invading the body. The immune system reacts to the invading allergen causing the body to release substances that trigger allergic symptoms lke a runny nose or red, itchy eyes. And in some kids it can include asthma type symptoms like coughing, wheezing or a tightness in the chest.

To find out if allergies may be causing your child’s asthma symptoms, it would be necessary to visit a doctor specializing in the area known as an allergist. This way it can be determined what the child is allergic to in looking for a solution. Usually avoiding the allergen prevents further allergic reactions and help stop any asthma symptoms. Medication may also be prescribed if the allergen cannot be completely avoided.

Whenever looking for a solution to any of your children’s health conditions, it’s always best to thoroughly research. Sites like this can lead you to great information on keeping kids healthy.
